What to Bring to the Bitch’s C-Section Surgeryīring the following with you to her C-section, so you may assist with an en route delivery (we hope this doesn’t happen) and safely transport your bitch and new litter home:
Marking system for puppies – avoid neck bands. Record keeping system for weights, temps, urine color, and other notes. 
Tincture of iodine for umbilical cord care. Heat source, avoiding heat lamps as they are fire hazards. Limit access to this area to children, extra people, and dogs. Having a quiet warm area of your home or kennel designated for the nursery. In advance of your bitch’s scheduled C-section, have your whelping area ready for your arrival home. What to Prepare Before the Bitch’s C-Section Do not use any topical flea and tick products on her within one week of her due date. Ask your vet if you have questions about specific medications. If she is on any medications, she may have those the morning of her surgery, with only enough canned dog food or cheese to coat the tablet. She may have access to water until she is ready to travel to the vet. You may feed her dinner the night before her surgery but do not give her food the morning of her surgery. You may also wish to shave part of her abdomen to minimize the shaving the veterinary clinic will do. This means she will be cleaner for surgery and for taking care of her puppies. These come in two sizes, and emit a pheromone that we believe helps with maternal skills for 4 weeks.Ī day or two prior to her surgery, you may wish to bathe her if you can do so safely. Three days before her surgery, please apply an Adaptil (DAP) collar. Because of this, we recommend you monitor her the last 48 hours before her surgery to be sure she does not go into labor unattended. However, in some cases such as in bitches carrying large litters or without precise progesterone timing at the breeding, this timing may be off by a few hours. In most cases, 63 days from ovulation is within 24 hours of her ideal due date. At our practice, we frequently schedule c-sections 62 days after ovulation so you don’t end up in the middle of the night at your local emergency clinic. Ovulation occurs when the progesterone reaches 4 to 8 ng/dl. You can estimate a bitch will be due to whelp 63 days after the day she ovulated.
